Food | The Best Places To Grab Brunch In Birmingham

Anyone who knows me even just a little bit knows how much I bloody love brunch and how I'll never turn down the opportunity for a good coffee - probably with an added stack of pancakes on the side...

Back home there was a definite lack of places to eat the good stuff if you weren't up for chilling in a pub at 10am, so you'll understand how excited I was to move to Birmingham last summer and have a plethora of brunch options on my doorstep to choose from.
Since I've been here a year now, I've definitely had the opportunity to do my fair share of brunchin' and I thought I'd share with you some of my favourite places to grab a plate of goodness or even just a fab cup of coffee!

Medicine Bakery & Gallery / 69a New Street, Birmingham City Centre

If you're not sold when you walk in based on just the cake table alone (LOOK AT IT!), you'll definitely love the open vibe and the tasty menu that runs all day. The dining space is huge, with a really bright and airy vibe, which makes it the perfect place to perch for the day with your laptop or a good book, and since the space also doubles up as a gallery, with exhibitions that change every few months, there's always something interesting to look at while you wait for your food!
The coffee is FAB (if you order a large latte it comes in a literal bowl which is an instant 10/10 from me), and the food menu is really varied - the couple of options I've tried have been DELISH and they definitely don't scrimp on the portion sizes.

You need to try: the turkish eggs, or the korean chicken if you're going a little later in the day!

Yorks Café / 20-30 Stephenson Street and 1 Oozells Square (next to the Ikon Gallery)

There's a couple of York's cafés to choose from in Birmingham city centre but the Ikon Gallery location is definitely my fave of the two - I ADORE the interior design, and I'm definitely taking all of the inspiration for my non-existent house - plus it has a lovely little outdoor area in the middle of the boujie Brindley Place business square so you can people-watch to your hearts content!

The menu is broad and there's honestly something for everyone, and while the portions aren't quite as large as Medicine's, you still leave feeling satisfied and like you got your moneys worth. At first glance, the menu is fairly standard for a brunch place, but most things on the menu have a quirky York's twist, in particular, the egg's benedict which is served on a bloody hash brown instead of your standard muffin! The cake selection is to die for, and there's plenty of gluten free and vegan options so noone has to miss out!

You need to try: the hash brown version of eggs benedict and the tea - there's so much to choose from!

Urban Café / The Big Peg, Jewellery Quarter and 30 Church Street

Urban was the first place I discovered after moving to Birmingham, with the Jewellery Quarter location pretty much on my doorstep! It's got a really minimalist, industrial style vibe, and is absolutely perfect for plonking yourself in a corner with your laptop and getting work done while soaking up the background noise. Again, the coffee is fab, and they change up the blends quite often so there's always something different to try!

They do special 'Pancake Tuesdays' every week as well as bottomless brunch at the Church Street site every Saturday and Sunday, and the menu is so varied with loads of different options for every brunch dish you could possibly imagine, again with everyone being easily catered for!

The staff are an absolute delight, and it's my fave place to take myself when I want to get out of the house and treat myself to a coffee - and probably a peanut butter brownie on the side.

You need to try: The American style pancakes for sure, or the avocado smash if you want something more savoury!

Let me know in the comments if you're tried out any of these places, or if you're from Birmingham or nearby, I'd love to know where's your go-to for a good brunch!

Always, Alice x
