Life | The January Wellness Round-up


And just like that, the first month of 2019 is over and February is upon us...

Even though this January seemed like the longest month known to man ever, I can't believe its been and gone when Christmas and New Years only feel like they happened a week ago!

Nevertheless, I wanted to give you all a little round-up of my month and a little check in with myself and how I'm doing with my 2019 goals so far!

My first priority of January was to start eating better and to get into shape. Since moving to Birmingham at the end of August and then starting uni and basically having to adjust to a whole new life, any hope of eating healthy and keeping fit went down the toilet and I've basically been resembling a little round potato for some time now.
I know it's super cliché, but I always see January 1st as a fresh start and from then I'd decided enough was enough and it was time to get my arse into gear and look after myself, both mind and body. I'm not getting any younger and I've come to the realisation that I need to be more mindful about what I'm eating, not just to look great but also to feel great and really get the nourishment that I've been depriving myself of for months.

A month on and I've successfully eaten healthy for a whole entire month start to finish barring a trip to Digbeth Dining Club last week were I ate ALL the fried food, but balance, right? I don't think I've ever actually managed to keep up with healthy eating consistently for a whole month without giving into temptation and knocking back a whole bar of Dairy Milk every few days but I'm doing great so far and I really don't see myself falling off the wagon anytime soon!


I also set myself my usual January goal of completing the 30 Day Yoga With Adriene challenge that she posts every year. I bloody love yoga and I'm actually quite good at it considering I'm about as flexible as a steel rod, but every year I attempt the challenge and only manage to get about 6 days in before I start coming up with excuses for not having the time to fit it in and I sack it off altogether.

This year though I've been showing up for myself and really throwing myself into each practice, and while I haven't managed to keep up every single day for various reasons, I've been making a conscious effort to stop making excuses and make time to do it. I'm currently on day 22 and I think the whole experience is probably my favourite part of the last month, so much so that I really want to commit to practising yoga most days even when the challenge is long and over! If you've never heard of Yoga With Adriene, I'd definitely check her Youtube channel out and you can start the 30 day challenge at any point - it's so worth it!


As well as trying to look after my body this last month, I've also been trying to take more time to switch off and have more me time and I've found reading has been the perfect way to relax on an evening. I've watched barely any TV this month, choosing to curl up with my Kindle instead and I much prefer reading for half an hour with my morning coffee than scrolling mindlessly through Instagram! I'm already 10 books into my goal of reading 30 for the year, which is probably more than I read in 2018 combined and I've even got my other half into the habit too!
I used to be a total bookworm back in school so it's nice to revisit my old hobby again and I think it's doing me nothing but good and I'm a lot calmer and relaxed most days because of it.


I'm really happy with my start to year so far and I've found that I'm easily sticking to my little goals and I've got a lot more self-discipline than I've ever had before. As I've said, I really want to carry on with my yoga practice into the next month and beyond, perhaps by joining a class at some point and I've just rejoined a gym after not stepping foot in one since I left Yorkshire, so I'll keep you all updated with my progress on that either on here or over on my Instagram!
